Panch Kedar Story: After the big Mahabharata war, the Pandavas wanted Lord Shiva's blessings to wash away their sins. Lord Shiva turned into a bull to hide from them. When they found him, he disappeared underground, and his body parts appeared at five different spots in the mountains (called Panch Kedar).
Why Tungnath is Special: Lord Shiva's arms appeared right here at Tungnath. At 3,680 meters (12,073 ft), it is the highest Shiva temple on Earth and is over 1,000 years old. The surrounding mountains form the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys. (Note: The temple remains closed during winter from November to April).
The Magic of Chandrashila: Sitting right above Tungnath at 4,000 meters (13,000 ft), Chandrashila literally means "Moon Rock." Legend says Lord Rama meditated here after defeating Ravana, while another tale says Chandra, the Moon God, prayed here. This easy-to-moderate trek gives you an incredible 360-degree view of Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch, and Chaukhamba.
Holy Mountains: Before becoming a famous skiing spot, Auli was known for its peaceful vibe surrounded by giant, sacred peaks like Nanda Devi and Kamet.
Guru Adi Shankaracharya: In the 8th century, the famous saint Guru Adi Shankaracharya visited this area. He prayed under a tree in nearby Joshimath, gained deep wisdom, and built his spiritual seat (Jyotir Math).
What "Auli" Means: The name comes from Auli Bugyal, which simply means "green grass meadow" in the local Garhwali language. Local herders used to bring their animals here to graze during the summer.
